A Thunderstorm Damages the Electric Plant

July 27, 1896

A July 1896 storm report described a burned-out Shamokin Electric Light Company armature and temporarily disabled telephone lines across the county.

Some details remain uncertain

A severe thunderstorm swept the area on the afternoon of July 27, 1896. The Mount Carmel Daily News's account the following day described dark clouds, close lightning and damage reported from across the county. In Shamokin, the new armature of the Shamokin Electric Light Company had burned out.

The paper put the armature loss at $1,000. It also reported temporarily disabled telephone lines elsewhere in its countywide account, a barn destroyed by lightning at Sunbury and damage at Hotel Shikellimy. The Shamokin equipment failure was one incident within a wider storm, not the location of every loss described on the page.

The report gives no duration for an electric outage, no maker for the armature and no replacement date. Its headline about fifteen men killed concerned a separate flood casualty at McDonald in Washington County, not deaths in Shamokin. The supported local story is the damaged electrical machinery, with telephone disruption reported on the broader county network.
