The Library Opens at Independence and Ninth

July 16, 1962

Young readers joined librarian Mrs. Earl Ginter at the library's new location on July 16, 1962.

Some details remain uncertain

The Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library opened at Independence and Ninth Streets on the afternoon of July 16, 1962. A photograph published the next day showed librarian Mrs. Earl Ginter with three young patrons present for the new location's first afternoon.

The move had been announced in June. Board president Miriam McConnell anticipated a mid-July opening, while Ginter said the Eighth and Water Streets library would close on June 30. That announcement prepared readers for an interruption in service while the library changed locations.

The new library began with limited afternoon and evening hours, excluding Wednesdays and Sundays. A normal schedule was expected later in the month. The July account identified the location by its intersection; it did not give a numbered street address.
