An Irish Valley Stone Is Exhibited as a Meteor

October 1907

A farmer's reported discovery drew attention in Shamokin in October 1907, without establishing the stone's composition.

Some details remain uncertain

A stone said to have fallen in Irish Valley was brought to Shamokin for exhibition in October 1907. The Mount Carmel Item reported that it had narrowly missed a farm laborer working in a field on the preceding Wednesday, October 9.

The newspaper described the object as a fragment of a meteor. Its account connected the reported fall with thunder, lightning, a briefly red sky, and other observations of meteors southwest of the city.

The exhibition made the find a local curiosity. The report did not establish the stone's composition or trace its later whereabouts, so the account remains a reported meteor discovery rather than a verified specimen history.
