September 4, 1883
The First National Bank of Shamokin organized on September 4, 1883, with named officers and plans to use banking rooms on Sunbury Street.
Some details remain uncertainOn September 4, 1883, the First National Bank of Shamokin organized with C. Graeber as president, Alexander Fulton as vice president and George C. Graeber as cashier. The Sunbury Weekly News reported the new institution ten days later, giving readers names and an intended address rather than merely announcing that another bank was coming.
Its banking rooms were in C. Graeber's building on Sunbury Street near Washington Street. The Shamokin Banking Company had formerly occupied them. The new bank was preparing to work from premises already associated with banking, not announcing the completion of a purpose-built new building.
The directors named were C. Graeber, Alexander Fulton, Isaac May Sr., John Mullen, George Marshall, George Hack, John S. Graeber and George C. Graeber. The account ended with the expectation that the bank would be ready for business soon. Organization day and opening day were therefore different milestones: the officers and directors had been chosen, while the start of business was still ahead.
