Community & everyday lifeFour Golfers Report a Shining Disk over the Country Club
July 22, 1952
A short sighting near the seventh hole became local news in July 1952; the object's identity remained unresolved.
Some details remain uncertainWilliam Fetterolf, his son Norman, Paul Wehr, and James McAdoo reported seeing a shining object near the Shamokin Valley Country Club on the evening of July 22, 1952. The four golfers were near the seventh hole, west of the clubhouse, at about eight o'clock.
Their description, printed two days later, was of a shiny, soundless, platter-like object moving from north to south. It was reportedly visible for about twelve seconds. The News-Dispatch placed the account amid other reports of unusual objects in the sky.
The story preserves what the golfers said they saw. No photograph of the object accompanied the local report, and the article did not establish what it was. The sighting's interest lies in a brief experience that four named residents brought into the town's conversation, not in a proven explanation for it.
