A Thunderstorm Delays the Centennial Youth Parade

July 3, 1964

Shamokin's baby, pet, and youth procession went ahead on July 3, 1964, after a forty-minute weather delay.

Some details remain uncertain

A downpour interrupted plans for Shamokin's Centennial youth parade on Friday, July 3, 1964. The baby, pet, and youth procession eventually began at 3:50 in the afternoon, forty minutes late, according to the News-Dispatch.

The newspaper reported 380 entries. Its coverage placed the weather delay within the children's procession rather than the separate firemen's parade that followed on Saturday.

The celebration continued despite the storm. This account belongs to the young participants' day in the Centennial program; the next day's fire-company march had its own participants, prizes, and story.
