A Local Newspaper Business

The Library of Congress catalogs the Shamokin News-Dispatch as published from 1933 through 1967 and identifies earlier Shamokin newspaper titles in its publishing lineage.

Pages Made for the Present

The paper reported events, sold advertising, and circulated community information. A preserved 1956 page shows retail promotions sharing space with local news.

An Archive for the Future

What began as a daily product now provides names, prices, photographs, and stories that may survive nowhere else. The newspaper’s business history and the city’s documentary history are inseparable.

Two Newspaper Lines Joined in 1933

The centennial history dates the Dispatch to 1886 and the Daily News to 1893, then records their combination on September 18, 1933. Those dates explain the News-Dispatch name without collapsing the two earlier papers into one uninterrupted title.

Printer of the Jubilee Booklet

The News-Dispatch advertisement identifies the newspaper as printer of the Diamond Jubilee booklet and places its job-printing department at 519 North Rock Street. A conflicting founding-year passage elsewhere in the booklet remains withheld.
