Bringing Public Water to Shamokin

Shamokin Water Company’s 1872 incorporation and the beginning of public service in 1873 belong to a longer story that also includes an earlier pine-log line and the later Roaring Creek company.

An Earlier Pine-Log Line

An early civic history describes an effort that carried water through a pine-log line. The line predates the incorporated company, but it is not used to declare a complete chronology or assign a superlative place to that effort.

Incorporated in 1872, Serving in 1873

Shamokin Water Company was incorporated on August 5, 1872, and the historical account places the beginning of public water service in 1873. Keeping incorporation and service as separate milestones avoids turning two distinct events into one unsupported date.

A Continuing Infrastructure Story

The account also describes the later Roaring Creek company. Together, the pine-log line, the incorporated company, and the later enterprise show water service developing over time. Exact engineering details, ownership transitions, and service areas have not yet been established.
