Julia Radle Takes the Preliminary Bar Examination

June 19, 1899

The Dickinson graduate joined a class of thirty-four examinees in Northumberland County in June 1899.

Some details remain uncertain

In June 1899, Julia Radle took a preliminary examination for admission to the Northumberland County bar. The Northumberland County Democrat identified her as a Georgetown resident and a graduate of Dickinson Law School.

The semiannual examinations were held in Court Room No. 2 on Monday, June 19. The newspaper said the class numbered thirty-four and praised Radle’s work, expressing confidence that she would succeed.

That favorable report recorded a step toward practice, not the completion of every requirement. An examination, admission to a court and later professional recognition were separate milestones. Radle’s examination belongs in that sequence on its own terms.
