Ideas recorded for Shamokin’s second century in 1964 now sit beside the 2020 GoShamokin plan, the city’s 2024 exit from Act 47, and continuing street-safety work as milestones in a long process of downtown renewal.

Priorities for a Second Century
A 1964 centennial volume presented downtown parking, redevelopment, library expansion, industrial development, and community planning as priorities for Shamokin’s next century. They are historical proposals and aspirations, not a checklist of projects proved complete.
A Downtown Plan Revised in March 1964
A separate future-land-use map for downtown Shamokin carries a March 13, 1964 revision date and identifies the Shamokin City Planning Commission with Clifton E. Rodgers and Associates. It records a planning proposal at the opening of the city’s second century, not proof that every use shown on the plan was built.
A Community Plan Adopted in 2020
City Council adopted the GoShamokin revitalization plan on October 12, 2020. The plan brought building reuse, public space, business activity, and downtown identity into one framework while distinguishing planning goals from completed work.
A Financial Recovery Milestone
Pennsylvania announced Shamokin’s exit from Act 47 distressed-municipality status in 2024. That milestone documents a change in municipal financial status; it does not by itself mean that every economic, housing, or infrastructure challenge was resolved.
Safety Work Continues
The city’s current safety-planning material keeps streets and public movement within the revitalization conversation. Historic priorities, the 2020 plan, the Act 47 milestone, and continuing safety work together show renewal as a sequence of civic choices rather than a single finished event.
