Reading the Mural
The mural links large industries with familiar local businesses, food, transportation, and invention. Its railroad imagery recalls a line chartered in 1826 to move anthracite from Shamokin toward regional markets. The traveling waffle iron represents John Kleimbach's 1891 portable design for the Mansion House Hotel.
