Shamokin’s Old Academy on Grant Street

A photograph in the 1939 Jubilee booklet preserves the Old Academy, a Grant Street building the caption associates with an intended Lutheran seminary and later school-district use.

Some details remain uncertain

The Old Academy

The Jubilee caption identifies the pictured building as the Old Academy and places it facing Grant Street. The photograph is published as a collection record, not as proof of a surviving modern structure.

An Intended Seminary

The caption says Lutheran Church members erected the building about 1852 for an intended Lutheran seminary. That chronology remains explicitly caption-derived rather than independently reconstructed here.

School-District Use

The same caption says the building became a Shamokin school-district unit through purchase in 1864. No modern coordinate is published until the historic site and later street numbering are separately reconciled.
