Soldiers and Sailors Monument
An 80-foot Civil War memorial that has watched over Lincoln Street for more than a century.
Erected in 1898 by the men, women, and children of Shamokin, this memorial honors the soldiers and sailors of the Civil War, then commonly called the War of the Rebellion.
A Community Memorial
Its dedication was organized under the auspices of Lincoln Post No. 140 of the Grand Army of the Republic, the fraternal organization for Union veterans.

The monument shows how remembrance was a community project: its inscription credits Shamokin's citizens across generations, not only veterans or government leaders.
Why This Memorial Matters
The monument was erected by Shamokin citizens and Lincoln G.A.R. Post 140. Grand Army of the Republic posts helped preserve Union veterans' stories and organize public memorials across the country. Its Lincoln Street location has kept Civil War memory visible in Shamokin's daily civic life since 1898.
